Immunity to COVID-19 – It’s Not All About Antibodies

Have you had the flu in the last few years?  Have you even had a cold?

You may be immune to COVID -19 without even having it. Our bodies are amazing at sleuthing out foreign and dangerous toxins in our bodies. In fact, immune cells known as “memory T-cells “play an important role in the ability of our immune systems to protect us against many viral infections, including – it now appears – Covid-19 according to research undertaken by Antonio Bertoletti at the Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore.

Studies have shown that we maintain in our bodies what are called “memory T-cells” long after we have had a cold or a bought with the seasonal flu.  These memory T-cells are much longer-lasting than antibodies produced from having Covid-19 or any other virus. These T-cells are activated when we get a cold, the seasonal flu, or Covid-19.

Covid-19 belongs to a large family of coronaviruses. Four of these coronaviruses are responsible for giving us the common cold.   The SARS family of viruses is responsible for the common cold,  SARS-CoV-1, the virus responsible for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) which ended in 2004, MERS-CoV, the virus that caused the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), first discovered in Saudi Arabia in 2012, and 6 other viruses that have proven to be much less lethal.

But if you have gotten any of these illnesses you have an army of memory T-cells waiting to protect your system.  Immunity is almost built into the human body just by getting a cold.

This helps to explain why some people seem resistant to the Covid-19 virus while others become extremely ill. Your past health is a determiner of your present and future health.

Of course, if you decide to live an unhealthy lifestyle that will undermine the army of “memory T-cells” waiting to take out any disease.  Fast food and sugary foods are your worst enemy during this pandemic. You need to make sure you are a “Bad Host” for viruses (of all kinds) by

  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Getting outside and exercising
  • Eating lots of fruits and vegetables
  • Getting adequate sleep
  • Relieving pain by getting an adjustment

Studies have shown that there is a burst of white blood cell activity when you get your spine adjusted by a chiropractor.  How many of those white blood cells will turn into “memory T-cells” because you have something in your system for them to fight?  And how long will those T-cells patrol your body – keeping your immune system strong?
